About

Joel Lai

I am currently a research fellow (senior data scientist) at the Centre for Applications of Teaching and Learning Analytics for Students (ATLAS). ATLAS is a centre under the Institute for Pedagogical Innovation, Research and Excellence (InsPIRE), Nanyang Technological University. I am working on learning analytics, in particular for automated tagging of skills. My current research interest is in self-regulated learning with generative artificial intelligence and how this can inform the development of natural language processing and large language models.

I pursued a doctoral degree studying applications of Parrondo’s paradox in complex systems. My main interest is in quantum game theory, social dynamics and Physics education research. I am not sure when the studying will end, but hopefully soon (I have officially graduated as of 27 February 2023). The studying can end, but not the learning. My passion is in understanding how the world works and making it intuitive for all.

Outside of academia, I am an avid fan of Formula 1 and Formula E. My love for F1 has brought me to countries like Azerbaijan, the 1000th Grand Prix in Shanghai and left me stranded when the 2020 Australian Grand Prix was cancelled. My dream is to take a 1 year sabbatical and travel to all the F1 races in a single trip. I also love solo travels and particularly enjoy long road trips and mountain trekking. I have learnt to embrace the #원스 (Once) in me after many years of being a #소원 (Sone). If you know, you know. I don’t quite listen to music, but when I do, hymns and Korean Ballad (especially OSTs). I have an inherent interest in theology and have several preaching assignments, mainly targeted at the youths of today. I go into this, not just to know, but also to experience, so that the glory of God can be magnified.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 (English Standard Version)
